PM Modi to release commemorative coin honouring Bhupen Hazarika
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on September 8 to participate in the birth centenary celebrations of legendary singer, composer, and cultural icon Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday.
As part of the celebrations, Prime Minister Modi will release a commemorative coin in honour of Dr Hazarika, paying tribute to his immense contribution to Indian music, art, and culture. The event will be held at the Khanapara Veterinary College playground in Guwahati, beginning at 5 PM.
The occasion will also see the unveiling of multilingual biographies of Dr Hazarika, chronicling his life, achievements, and lasting impact on Indian cultural heritage.
A major highlight of the event will be a Grand Chorus performance, featuring 1,000 singers drawn from colleges and among senior musicians across Assam. The ensemble will present a 23-minute medley of Bhupen Hazarika’s most iconic songs, celebrating his musical legacy.
To honour those who were closely associated with the late maestro, the state government has made special arrangements to bring approximately 50 individuals from each district of Assam to attend the ceremony.
Chief Minister Sarma also announced that citizens interested in joining the celebration must apply through the official portal by August 20. Invitations will be sent to selected participants at their residential addresses.
Apart from the centenary event, Prime Minister Modi will also visit multiple districts to inaugurate major development projects: In Golaghat district, he will dedicate to the nation a Rs 4,200 crore bio-ethanol plant at Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL). In Mangaldoi (Darrang district), he will: Inaugurate the Guwahati Ring Road. Open a new bridge over the Brahmaputra River, connecting Kuruwa and Narengi. Lay the foundation stone for the Mangaldoi Medical College and Hospital.
