Veteran Malayalam Actor Salim Kumar Passes Away at 56 in Kochi
National Award-winning Malayalam actor Salim Kumar passed away late Saturday night at a private hospital in Kochi. He was 56.
According to reports, the actor died around 10:45 pm on June 6 after suffering a cardiac arrest while undergoing treatment for health complications. He had been placed on ventilator support as his condition worsened.
Salim Kumar, one of Malayalam cinema’s most versatile performers, began his career in 1996 with the film Ishtamanu Nooruvattam and went on to appear in over 300 films across a career spanning three decades. He initially rose to fame through mimicry stages and television comedy before establishing himself in films with his unique comic timing and character portrayals.
He earned widespread critical acclaim for his performance in Adaminte Makan Abu (2010), for which he won the National Film Award for Best Actor as well as the Kerala State Film Award. He also received State Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Comedian for earlier performances.
Beyond Malayalam cinema, Salim Kumar acted in Tamil, Bengali, and Odia films, earning recognition for his versatility across languages and genres.
Public homage is being held at Paravur Town Hall, where fans, colleagues, and political leaders have gathered to pay their last respects. His funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
The film fraternity has expressed deep grief over his demise, remembering him as a gifted actor who transformed comedy and character roles in Malayalam cinema.
