11 Dead as Sikkim Tunnel Collapse Rescue Efforts Continue
Rescue operations are underway in Sikkim after an under-construction tunnel at the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project in Samardung, Namchi district, collapsed, leaving several workers trapped inside.
At least 11 bodies have been recovered so far, according to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Namchi district. Officials suspect that around 25 workers may still be trapped inside the tunnel, which is believed to have collapsed due to landslides on Monday.
The rescue operation is being carried out by the Namchi district administration in coordination with NHPC officials, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Sikkim Police, Fire and Emergency Services, the Health Department, and other government agencies.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang Golay and assured all possible assistance from the Centre. The Chief Minister briefed the Prime Minister on the ongoing rescue measures, and both leaders expressed grief over the tragic incident.
