Tripura Leads ST Education Reform with New Scholarship Initiative
Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma has announced a major education reform, stating that the state has become the first in India to introduce the empanelment of private B.Ed. and D.El.Ed. institutions under the Post-Matric Scholarship Scheme for Scheduled Tribe (ST) students.
Sharing the development through a social media post, Debbarma highlighted the move as a historic step aimed at expanding access to quality teacher education for tribal students while ensuring greater transparency, accountability and efficiency in the implementation of the scholarship programme.
The minister said the new empanelment system would help streamline the scholarship process and create better opportunities for ST students aspiring to pursue professional teacher training courses.
Following the announcement, Debbarma chaired a review meeting with officials of the Tribal Welfare Department and representatives of the newly empanelled institutions to discuss the effective implementation of the scheme for the 2026–27 academic session.
The meeting focused on institutional responsibilities, compliance with government guidelines and measures to ensure the smooth execution of the programme for the benefit of students.
Describing the initiative as a reflection of the Tripura government’s commitment towards empowering Scheduled Tribe youth through education, Debbarma expressed confidence that the reform would strengthen monitoring mechanisms and help deserving students access teacher training opportunities with greater ease.
The minister’s announcement has been projected as a significant milestone in the state’s efforts to promote inclusive education and enhance career pathways for tribal students.
