Meghalaya Cracks Down on Illegal Parking Along NH-6 to Enhance Road Safety

In a bid to improve road safety and prevent accidents, the Meghalaya government has imposed a complete ban on roadside parking along National Highway 6, between Jorabat and Byrnihat in Ri-Bhoi district.

Superintendent of Police V.S. Rathore announced the measure on Friday, warning that trucks and other vehicles found parked along the highway would face strict legal penalties. He emphasized that the ban would be rigidly enforced, and violators would not be spared.

Rathore also instructed dhaba and hotel owners along the highway not to allow vehicles to park near their establishments. Continued violations could result in penalties for both vehicle owners and the establishments, with police empowered to order closures of non-compliant roadside eateries or hotels under magisterial powers.

The district police have launched an intensified drive to curb unsafe practices on the busy highway, which serves as a key connection between Meghalaya and Assam. Rathore noted that illegal parking poses serious risks, including obstructing traffic and reducing visibility, often leading to fatal accidents.

“This crackdown was initiated following repeated public complaints about haphazard parking that causes congestion and accidents,” he said. “Since enforcement began, the number of accidents has dropped considerably. We are determined to ensure strict compliance to prevent further loss of life.”
