Assam CM Inaugurates Swahid Smarak Kshetra to Honour Assam Movement Martyrs

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Swahid Smarak Kshetra on Wednesday, paying tribute to the martyrs of the Assam Movement on Swahid Divas.

“The Swahid Smarak is our solemn tribute to the 855 martyrs of Asom Andolan, whose resounding chants of ‘Joi Aai Asom’ echo through time. This monument, a beacon of their legacy, will inspire generations to serve Assam with pride,” CM Sarma said in a post on X.

The newly inaugurated memorial is designed to document the history of the Assam Movement (1979–1985). It features installations highlighting key events and sacrifices and includes spaces for public gatherings, educational programs, and cultural activities.

CM Sarma called the inauguration a historic occasion, coming nearly 45 years after the martyrdom of Swahid Khargeswar Talukdar, adding that this is the first time the state government is formally honoring the martyrs on such a large scale.

Swahid Diwas, observed annually on December 10, commemorates those who lost their lives during the Assam Movement, a civil disobedience campaign led by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AASGP) from 1979, aimed at protesting infiltration from Bangladesh.
