Minister Tinku Roy Launches Campaign to End Child Marriage, Calls it a “Social Curse”

Social Welfare and Social Education Minister, Tinku Roy, has described child marriage as a “social curse” and vowed to completely eradicate the practice from the state. He made the statement during the inauguration of a state-level awareness program aimed at promoting a child marriage-free India and preventing gender-based violence, held at a private hotel in Agartala on Thursday.

Minister Roy highlighted that child marriage not only deprives children, particularly girls, of education and proper healthcare but also perpetuates cycles of social inequality and gender-based violence. “Creating a safe, healthy, and gender-equal society requires collective awareness, education, and social responsibility,” he said. The minister affirmed the government’s commitment to reducing child marriage cases to zero in Tripura.

The program, organized by the Department of Social Welfare and Social Education, brought together key officials, including Jharna Debbarma, Chairperson of the Women’s Commission; Jayanti Debbarma, Chairperson of the Child Protection Commission; and Tapan Kumar Das, Director of Social Welfare and Social Education. The event focused on raising awareness about the legal, social, and health implications of child marriage and gender-based violence, while encouraging community participation in protecting children’s rights.

Minister Roy also urged civil society, educators, and local leaders to actively support the campaign, emphasizing that a collective effort is essential to ensure a safe and dignified future for the next generation.
