Assam CM Lays Foundation Stone for Museum to Exhibit Historic Vrindavani Vastra

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for a new Cultural Museum at Khanapara, Guwahati, which will house the historic 16th-century Vrindavani Vastra. The textile, traditionally attributed to the Vaishnavite saint-scholar Srimanta Sankardeva, depicts scenes from the life of Lord Krishna and is renowned for its exquisite Assamese weaving and devotional artistry.

Currently preserved in the British Museum in London, the Vrindavani Vastra is set to return to Assam for an 18-month exhibition starting in 2027, following an agreement signed between the Government of Assam and the British Museum last year.

The museum project, situated on land provided by the state sericulture department, is designed to meet modern conservation standards, including climate and light controls, to protect the delicate silk fabric. The facility will include exhibition galleries, conservation laboratories, and interpretation centers to educate visitors about the textile’s history, art, and cultural significance.

Officials described the museum as a major step in preserving Assam’s heritage and promoting cultural tourism, reconnecting the state with a treasured artefact created during the Vaishnavite movement of the 16th century.
