PM Modi Launches ₹23,550 Crore Development Projects in Silchar, Assam

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated major development projects in Silchar worth ₹23,550 crore, aiming to boost connectivity, infrastructure, and education in southern Assam’s Barak Valley.

The Prime Minister performed the ‘Bhumi Pujan’ (groundbreaking ceremony) for three key projects:

Silchar High-Speed Corridor: A 166 km access-controlled expressway connecting Silchar and Shillong, with an investment of ₹22,864 crore. The project will reduce travel time between Guwahati and Silchar from 8.5 hours to approximately 5 hours and enhance trade and economic growth in the region.

Silchar Town Flyover (NH-306 Elevated Corridor, Phase-I): Projected at ₹565 crore, this flyover will decongest one of Silchar’s busiest roads and improve connectivity with neighboring states such as Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur.

Patharkandi Agricultural College in Karimganj: With a budget of ₹122 crore, the new college aims to strengthen agricultural education and research in Assam, providing students with access to high-quality education closer to home.

Speaking at the event, PM Modi said the Barak Valley is emerging as a strategic bridge connecting India with Southeast Asia and highlighted the region’s role in the government’s Act East Policy. He also criticized the Congress party for decades of neglect in the region, stressing that the current projects will restore its strategic and economic significance.

The Prime Minister added that the government is working to minimize the impact of global conflicts on Indian citizens, ensuring they face the fewest possible hardships.
