NEC Meet: HM Amit Shah Pushes AI Push in Northeast, Calls Region a ‘Hotspot of Opportunities’
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday called for a major shift in governance priorities in the North Eastern states, urging Chief Ministers to focus on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain to prepare the region for future generations.
Addressing the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in Shillong, Shah said the Northeast has moved beyond challenges of insurgency and should now concentrate on development, innovation, and safeguarding citizens’ rights. He stated that the region has been transformed from a “hotspot of disputes” into a “hotspot of opportunities” under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Shah directed state governments to build robust digital infrastructure to support AI, machine learning, and blockchain ecosystems, emphasizing their importance in preparing the youth for a technology-driven future. He also urged states to actively promote the region’s economic strengths, including agarwood production, foreign trade, and health tourism.
Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region Jyotiraditya Scindia also attended the meeting and noted that all stakeholders remain united in their commitment to the region’s development.
Host Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K. Sangma said the discussions reflected collective efforts by northeastern states to work together on shared development goals, as outlined by the Union Home Minister and DoNER Ministry.
The plenary session brought together governors, chief ministers, deputy chief ministers, and senior officials from across the eight northeastern states. Deliberations focused on progress made by high-level task forces covering agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, and sports development.
