Praggnanandhaa Makes History as First Indian to Win Norway Chess Title
Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa has created history by winning the prestigious Norway Chess tournament, becoming the first Indian player to claim the title since its inception in 2013.
The 20-year-old from Chennai secured the championship in the final round with a crucial classical victory over Germany’s Vincent Keymer. Starting the day in third place, Praggnanandhaa delivered under pressure to finish with 18 points and top the standings.
His triumph marks a significant milestone for Indian chess, as neither five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand nor reigning world champion D. Gukesh had previously won the Norway Chess title.
American Grandmaster Wesley So finished second with 17 points after winning an Armageddon tie-break against France’s Alireza Firouzja, who took third place with 15.5 points. Norway’s Magnus Carlsen ended fourth after losing his final-round game to Praggnanandhaa.
Praggnanandhaa’s campaign was highlighted by strong classical performances, including two victories over Carlsen, underlining his rise as one of the leading players in world chess.
