Tripura celebrates auspicious Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima, the day Lord Buddha was born, was celebrated with full devotion here on Friday. On the auspicious occasion, hundreds of devotees gathered at the Buddha monastery in Agartala to light candles and offer prayers.

According to a Buddhist priest, Buddha Purnima is the most sacred day in the Buddhist calendar and is celebrated on the full-moon day of Vaisakh (April - May) blessed by the birth, enlightenment and passing way of the Buddha.

Here not only Buddhist, but people from other religion also participate for the celebration, showing the enduring welfare of humanity, the priest said.

It not only marks the day when Gautam Buddha was born but also the day when he attained Nirvana under the Mahabodhi tree at Bodh Gaya.  Lord Buddha was born as Prince Siddhartha Gautama on the full moon day in 563 BC at Lumbini in Nepal. In Hinduism, Buddha is considered as the ninth avatar of Lord Vishnu. His birth anniversary is also known as Vaisakhi Buddha Purnima or Vesak.
