Tripura Govt’s paddy procurement process receives massive response from farmers; Over 17000 MT of paddy procured during Kharif season: Food Minister

The state government has procured 17,497.109 MT of paddy from farmers this year at the minimum subsidized price in Kharif season, said food and civil supplies minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Tuesday.

Addressing a press conference, the minister said that the paddy has been purchased at the rate of Rs 23 per kg. where at least 8922 farmers were benefited.

In the press conference, he said that this paddy has been purchased from farmers through 51 paddy procurement centers in 19 subdivisions across the state. The state government has spent Rs 40.25 Crore, he added.

The paddy procurement in the Kharif season was started from December 19, last year with the initiative of the Food Department and with the active cooperation of the Agriculture Department, which was completed on February 8 this year, he told reporters.

The Food Minister also said that after the establishment of the present government, the program of procuring paddy from farmers twice in a year in Kharif and Rabi seasons was started. Since 2018, a total of 2 25356.805 metric tons of paddy has been procured from farmers in the state, he said.

He said that this paddy procurement process has so far received massive response from the farmers of the state. The government is a farmer-friendly government and this effort of the government will continue to strengthen the financial condition of the farmers, he added.

Meanwhile, the minister said that in order to save the society from road safety, ensure consumer protection and eradicate drug addiction, the state-wide public awareness program 'Jagriti' was conducted in the joint initiative of Transport Department and Food Department and with the cooperation of various departments.

Students from various educational institutions including 25 General Degree Colleges, and others participated in this programme. About 5200 students of the state participated in this program, he said, adding that this 'awakening' program started on January 11 from Udaipur in Gomati district and it came to an end on February 10 at Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan in Agartala.
