TRIPURA: Club secretary shot dead inside car, police launches probe

In yet another tragic incident, a local club secretary of Ushabazar Bharat Ratna Sangha was shot dead at point-blank range inside his car at Shalbagan area on Tuesday night.

The superintendent of police of West Tripura district Kiran Kumar informed that the incident took place after an unidentified assailant covering his face approached the club secretary identified as Durga Prasanna Deb, alias Viki Deb soon after he reached at Shalbagan area on Tuesday night and shot him dead.

The police officer informed that the assailant prompted him to lower the car window and upon doing so, the assailant fired three rounds from his firearm at a close range and killed Deb on the spot. Intensive search operations are being conducted to apprehend the culprits, said police officer.

Soon after the incident, the victim's body was moved to the mortuary of a private hospital where leaders of the ruling BJP visited the bereaved family. Deb’s wife alleged five people were responsible for her husband’s murder. She demanded severe punishment for the culprits and said no stone should be left unturned to ensure justice.

Reacting to the incident, the former MLA and senior BJP leader Dr Dilip Das expressed grief over the death and said, “This is an unfortunate incident. The deceased was the secretary of the local club. We had organised an initiative to offer drinking water to people in the hot weather. He had overseen the entire event.”
